The Ultimate Buying Guide to Buy The Best Angle Grinder

Here are some things that should be taken into consideration before purchasing a grinder for yourself. It will help you in choosing the best one for your projects.

Disc Size

The disc size and the wheel size of the grinder indicate how powerful the device is. Other than that, they also signify the overall capacity of the tool. The larger the tool, the more powerful it will be. I believe if your work requires more power, you should opt for the one with the maximum disc size.

However, those who require precision in their work, smaller discs are more optimal. Hence, I suggest, whenever you will be selecting one for yourself, make sure you keep your work requirements in mind.

Will you be taking on a lot of smaller spaces and angles that are tight? If yes, the best option for you will be a compact angle grinder. Moreover, as I mentioned earlier, high volume work requires a large disc to produce a smooth finish. This is one factor that you need to be careful about. Discs are available between the size range of four to nine inches.

Power Source

Most of the angle grinders are powered with a battery. Although, I have seen corded or compressed air-powered ones as well. Make sure you look at the power source before buying one.

The cordless units have a higher price because they can easily be accessed within the lighter spots. But one thing you should know is that they are limited to the juice in the battery. You may have to wait a few hours for the battery to charge after it dies.

Tools with a cord can run for as long as you want because they are connected to the power source. However, I would say that your work will be limited to wherever it can reach and the power outlets as well.

I think that neither of the options is better than the other and it mainly depends on where you will be using it.

Speed

The speed of the grinder would ultimately tell what the performance of the grinder is. Talking about an average grinder, it ranges from 5000 to 10,000 revolutions per minute. Faster speeds produce the desired results rapidly in an experience craftsperson’s hands.

In my view, there is a catch though. If you are not well aware when it comes to using grinders, you will end up damaging your workpiece with an unnecessarily quick tool.

Do you need a solution to this problem? I will give you the answer to it that you should buy an angle grinder that has variable speed settings. It will allow you to select between different speed ranges and optimize the tool.

Moreover, to make things better, if you do not have access to such a feature, invest in one that has a speed range worth handling for you.

Wattage

The wattage indicates the level of power of the grinder. Speaking generally, tools with a higher power are also faster but I disagree with that because that is not really the case. It doesn’t mean if the wattage is higher than the motor will also withstand the excessive friction, heavy use and any other form of situational stress.

Slow Start

When you are working, you would want a tool that has a speed of 10,000 rotations per minute, but you don’t want that to kick in straight up. If that will be the case, it will straight up mess your precision. I think a slow start mode is safe and will ease you into using the power of your grinder.

Ergonomics

A tool that fits the human hand, it is said to be ergonomic. I know you all must be thinking it is weird because we all have this perspective that every tool is made for the human hand. But no. It isn’t, sadly.

Tools that are ergonomic are comfortable to use. They also prevent you from long term stresses and injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and inflammation.

The ergonomic movement is very strong when it comes to the power of tools. A lot of the manufacturers promote their product for fitting into this category. Although it isn’t something that can be taken for granted. My personal belief is that the tool should be comfortable to use. Make sure that it is.

Dust Resistant

Every tool comes in contact with dust and it is very common for the angle grinder as well. Not only do they kick tons of dust, but the design is such that the grinder is fully covered in it. People who are unlucky, the dust can get trapped in the inner workings and destroy it. So, for this very reason, some of the grinders are dust resistant. There is either a particular design or a seal that helps in preventing dust from blocking the funnels and ruining the tool’s motor.

Hand Guard

Hand protection is very important. You don’t want them to be affected by the sparks and splinters. Despite it not being a necessary feature, in my opinion, it is very handy. You can find handguards that are adjustable and can be altered according to your needs.

Price

Angle grinders are available in a wide range of prices. The good thing about it is that, as far as power tools are concerned, this one is inexpensive. Although if you ask me, the price of the grinder is moderate and even buyers who are under a budget can also get something really good.

Reviews of The 8 Best Angle Grinders

1. DeWalt DWE402 Angle Grinder

DeWalt DWE402 Angle Grinder

The DeWalt angle grinder is not only one of my favorites but also very impressively powerful. It has an 11-amp grinder that can navigate work that requires precision and that requires high volume with ease.

The size of DeWalt is such that it is compact enough to get into all the tight spaces. It also includes a handy dust ejector. It helps in holding up the motor.

My main consideration when it comes to angle grinders is safety and DeWalt gives me access to that. The handguard can rotate throughout the tool so that you can get complete protection from debris and sparks. Moreover, the hard case makes it easier to carry around.

One thing that I believe is a disadvantage is that it is very pricey considering angle grinders. If you are a beginner, the high power will be a lot to handle for you and if you aren’t experienced, you may over-grind the place of work.

Features

  • 11Amp AC/DC 11,000 rpm motor
  • Durable ejects dust that can be damaging
  • Two times greater brush life
  • Long transmission life with a large spiral bevel
  • Safety lock and paddle switch

Pros

  • Easy to carry
  • It has a dust ejection system
  • 11apms power supply

Cons

  • Costly
  • Not for beginners to use

2. Matika 9557PBX1 Angle Grinder

Matika 9557PBX1 Angle Grinder

Another hand grinder that I can swear upon is the Matika angle grinder. It should definitely be one of your options when buying one. This model is well balanced, and its size is also not very big. It weighs only 4.5 pounds and it consists of several features, which can make your life easier. The body of the angle grinder is designed to protect the internal parts from dust along with debris and seal it against them. This feature adds up to the lifespan of the tool. It also consists of a large paddle switch with a lock. This helps in keeping the grinder continuously either on or off.

One thing I believe is an added bonus, is that the grinder is shipped with multiple grinding wheels. My favorite feature is the pairing of the middle-mounted latch and the body length paddle switch.

Moreover, the latch of the tool prevents it from suddenly turning on when it isn’t being used, whereas the size of the grinder is such that it can be held in any position.

The kit comes with extra included discs, which are durable, just like the grinder, compared to the other ones at the same price, although the needs of the users can vary from person to person.

Regardless of the positive feedback, one problem that is usually seen is that the temperature of the grinder increases while using. It always beings to overheat when used during partially difficult jobs. This drawback affects heavy duty work. So, I think if your work is heavy, choose another one.

Features

  • A powerful 7.5amp motor
  • The barrel grip has a small diameter
  • On and off lock feature for continuous operation
  • AC/DC switch enables the use of an alternative power source

Pros

  • Reasonable
  • Convenient in size

Cons

  • Heats up

3. Milwaukee 2780-20 M18 Angle Grinder

Milwaukee 2780-20 M18 Angle Grinder

The Milwaukee angle grinder is from their M18 Fuel line. It uses either a four and a half or five-inch pad. As far as portable models are concerned, I strongly think this is the best cordless angle grinder available in the market these days.

The Redline Plus intelligence alerts you when the lithium battery needs to be recharged. It is a tool-free experience to change discs and it is very durable. In addition to that, it is also easy to work with.

Considering the overall design of this grinder, it is very solid. It does smaller jobs really well and is also portable. Makes it a perfect grinder to remove dust from the tools or for quick sharpening of tools.

Although grinders with cords are preferred over cordless ones, the technology and pricing are continuing to improve. Portability is of great concern, but battery life is an issue, still. Hence, if you ask me, it can be tough to decide whether or not this tool is worth buying for those who work for long hours.

Features

  • Brushless motor with ten times longer life
  • Paddle switch design provides comfort and ease
  • REDLINK PLUS intelligence gives an optimized performance

Pros

  • Brushless motor
  • Portable

Cons

  • The value is of concern compared to other angle grinders.

4. Bosch 18V Angle Grinder

Bosch 18V Angle Grinder

The compact design of Bosch is for people who require their tools for a lot of work. It can be used all day, every day. The electrical components are designed for long-term use specifically. They also have warranty protection, so, if anything, your grinder should last you longer.

Moreover, the design is made to be comfortable. The handle has on optimum design, which reduces vibration. In addition to that, it is light in weight and easy to use for long periods.

But one thing that I must warn you guys about is that this tool is expensive. Other than that, a lot of people complain that the handguard is very difficult to use.

Features

  • It has a wheel guard and grinding disc
  • The handle controls vibration
  • Comes with a bag, which makes it easy to carry

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Small-angle grinder
  • Can be used for longer periods
  • Comfortable to use

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Difficult to use

5. Metabo WEV15-125 HT 4.5” Angle Grinder

Metabo WEV15-125 HT 4.5” Angle Grinder

Metabo is a very well-known and respected brand of tools. You will be astonished, but the angle grinder was designed keeping a stone in mind. The 13.5 Amp/1,550 Watt, 2,800 to 9,600 RPM motor gives more than fifty percent of the torque, compared to the others, for quick removal.

The superior flow of air and the adjustable speed allows the grinder to run at an ideal speed, whereas the S-automatic safety slop helps in the prevention of kickbacks if there is ever a jam.

The verdict on this angle grinder is positive compared to the others. It has a long life span and is very powerful as well. This makes it the best heavy-duty angle grinder.

Although I do have an issue with the break in the speed control, despite the tool still functioning, the reason behind this break in the control is still unknown. Considering the fact that this problem occurs a year or so after the grinder has been purchased and used.

Features

  • S-automatic has a mechanical safety clutch. It minimizes kick-back as well
  • Soft restart and mechanical overload protection
  • The gear housing can be unscrewed

Pros

  • Quick removal
  • Adjustable speed

Cons

  • Break-in control

6. Hitachi G12SQ Paddle Switch Angle Grinder

Hitachi G12SQ Paddle Switch Angle Grinder

This model is compact and is very impressive, considering durability and performance. It is easy-to-use and consists of a larger four-and-a-half-inch paddle switch for improved safety. In addition to that, it comprises of a sports dual handle and an adjustable wheel guard. These features enable us to use it at any desired angle. The tool is very easy to use. It is light in weight, weighing only 3.5 pounds. My verdict on this is that it lives up to the name when it comes to heavy-duty work. It can grind down concrete and can also cut through metal bolts that are rusted without any hassle. Moreover, the auto-shutoff feature helps you in operating the grinder safely.

Features

  • Spindle lock for easy installation and removal of a wheel
  • It consists of a large paddle switch, which makes it easy to use
  • Adjustable wheel guard

Pros

  • Powerful
  • Light in weight
  • Paddle switch

Cons

  • Limited maximum speed

7. Porter-Cable PCC761B Angle Grinder

Porter-Cable PCC761B Angle Grinder

I would like to highlight another battery-powered angle grinder, which has a high-performance motor and a tough cutting speed of 8,500 RPM. The spindle locks of the Porter cable angle grinder help in changing the wheels quickly and the battery provides sufficient power.

The two handles over-molded and 3-position side handle have different advantaged. The former is designed for comfort, whereas the latter makes control easy.

The grinder cuts metal sheets very well. It also has the ability to cut quickly and efficiently. If you need a grinder for smaller tasks, I would suggest you purchase this one.  The battery is probably what you already have in your storage if you already own products by Porter.

Unfortunately, the product does not come with a battery and a charger. However, this makes it reasonable to purchase. Another drawback is that it can’t work through stacks and it can also overheat very easily. That is if you use a single battery for all the heavy chores. So, keep some spare battery in hand to prevent that from happening.

Features

  • Comprises of a high-performance motor that produces 8,500
  • Side handle with three positions
  • It is a part of the 20V Max system
  • Gear housing of cast metal

Pros

  • Cost friendly
  • Sufficient power

Cons

  • Overheats
  • Not reliable for heavy chores

8. Skil 9296-01 Paddle Switch Angle Grinder

Skil 9296-01 Paddle Switch Angle Grinder

Skil has improved safety features and is designed using new technology, such as a non-locking paddle switch at the bottom. It turns off on its own when it is released or dropped down. The three-position handle reduces vibration for a finish that is smoother. The rubber cord is 8 feet long, which makes it easy to use. In addition to that, it is also durable. It is light in weight, approximately 5 pounds and consists of a 7.5 amps motor.

I strongly agree with the fact that the quality of the motor makes a huge difference in the solidly built grinders. They can cut through materials like stainless steel for a few hours straight, without any hurdle. It also performs very well, without overheating. That is another advantage that should be considered. I would suggest one should get this to prevent the grinder from becoming hot while working.

Features

  • 5amp motor gives an optimum performance
  • Paddle switch without a lock, it automatically turns off when dropped
  • Durable with an extended life due to the heavy-duty metal gear

Pros

  • Paddle switch
  • Lightweight
  • Reduced vibration

Cons

  • High vibrations and noise
